Im Januar 1987 hatte ich für einen Stadtbericht in der Zeitschrift Tempo einen Fototermin mit dem Künstler Martin Kippenberger in Köln. Damals wohnte er im Hotel Chelsea – und genau dort wollte er auch fotografiert werden. Ich war erst 24 Jahre alt und hatte keine Ahnung, welch ikonische Persönlichkeit ich da porträtieren würde.
Ich schlug vor, ihn in ein Laken gehüllt – fast wie ein Gespenst – vor dem Hotel zu fotografieren. Das fand er doof und meinte, ein Kissen würde völlig ausreichen. Vorher wurde natürlich noch das ein oder andere Bier im Café Central getrunken. Es sieht dort heute noch genauso aus wie damals.
In January 1987, I had a photo session with the artist Martin Kippenberger in Cologne for a city feature in Tempomagazine. At the time, he was living at the Hotel Chelsea and insisted on being photographed there. I was only 24 years old and had no idea what an iconic figure I was about to portray.
I suggested photographing him wrapped in a sheet – almost like a ghost – in front of the hotel. He thought that was silly and said a cushion would do just fine. Before that, of course, we had a beer or two at Café Central, which still looks exactly the same today.
