Biographical Notes
Alfred Steffen (born in Bergheim near Cologne) is a photographer whose work since the mid-1980s has operated at the intersection of portraiture, documentary practice, and conceptual series. He received his formal photographic training at the Lette-Verein in Berlin and began his career at the influential magazine TEMPO, a publication that shaped the visual culture of an entire generation.
His work has appeared in Vogue, Stern, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, and Rolling Stone. Steffen has portrayed numerous international figures, among them Prince, Leonard Cohen, Lenny Kravitz, Laurie Anderson, Sigourney Weaver, the Beastie Boys, Herta Müller, and Willy Brandt.
Steffen’s oeuvre is structured into six overarching groups – Zeitgeist, People, Environment, Nature, Situations, and Patterns – spanning the euphoric collectivism of Berlin’s rave culture, the intimacies of club nights, urban architectures in New York, as well as quiet animal portraits and organic structures.
Among his key projects are:
– Portrait of a Generation – The Love Parade Family Book (TASCHEN, 1997), a landmark document of the 1990s rave movement.
– Comfort Zone (2001–2003), a nocturnal study of presence and vulnerability photographed in the unisex bathrooms of the Berlin club Cookies.
– Sagen Sie jetzt nichts / Don’t Say Anything (since 2006), an ongoing photographic interview series for Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin featuring around 160 international personalities.
– GOOD TIMES (New York, 1992–1994), urban panoramas and street scenes in the shadow of the World Trade Center, photographed before the digital shift.
– Boombox – The Golden Years 1978–1983 (2009), a conceptual portrait series on the object culture and aesthetics of urban sound.
– GREEN (since 2020), an inquiry into plants, structures, and chromatic reduction.
– Animals – intimate animal portraits, including the chimpanzee Milandu and a continuing series of donkey portraits.
A growing program of limited fine-art editions is currently emerging from Steffen’s analog and digital archives. It includes newly curated editions from iconic portrait sessions – such as Prince (Monaco, 1994), Giorgio Armani (Milan, 1995), Leonard Cohen, and Lemmy Kilmister – as well as large-scale cityscapes, conceptual works, and recent series including GREEN and Milandu Dreaming.
Steffen’s practice is defined by clarity, empathy, and an unpretentious visual language. “I am not interested in perfection – I am interested in presence,” he notes, a guiding principle that runs throughout his work.
After periods in Hamburg, New York, Paris, and Berlin, Alfred Steffen now lives and works in the Rhineland, where he is digitising, restructuring, and publishing his archive in curated editions.

Alfred Steffen (geboren in Bergheim bei Köln) ist Fotograf und arbeitet seit Mitte der 1980er-Jahre an der Schnittstelle von Porträt, dokumentarischer Praxis und konzeptuellen Serien. Seine formale fotografische Ausbildung absolvierte er am Lette-Verein in Berlin und begann seine Laufbahn beim einflussreichen Magazin TEMPO – einem Ort, der die visuelle Kultur einer ganzen Generation prägte.
Seitdem erschienen seine Arbeiten in Vogue, Stern, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin und Rolling Stone. Steffen porträtierte zahlreiche internationale Persönlichkeiten, darunter Prince, Leonard Cohen, Lenny Kravitz, Laurie Anderson, Sigourney Weaver, die Beastie Boys, Herta Müller und Willy Brandt.
Sein Werk gliedert sich in sechs übergeordnete Gruppen – Zeitgeist, People, Environment, Nature, Situations und Patterns – und reicht von der euphorischen Kollektivität der Berliner Rave-Kultur über die Intimitäten der Clubnächte bis zu urbanen Architekturen in New York sowie stillen Tierporträts und organischen Strukturen.

Dazu gehören neu kuratierte Editionen ikonischer Porträtsitzungen – etwa Prince (Monaco, 1994), Giorgio Armani (Mailand, 1995), Leonard Cohen und Lemmy Kilmister – ebenso wie großformatige Stadtlandschaften, konzeptuelle Arbeiten und die aktuellen Serien GREEN und Milandu Dreaming.
Seine Praxis ist geprägt von Klarheit, Empathie und einer unprätentiösen visuellen Sprache. „Mich interessiert nicht die Perfektion – mich interessiert die Präsenz“, sagt Steffen – ein Leitmotiv, das sich durch sein gesamtes Werk zieht.
Nach Aufenthalten in Hamburg, New York, Paris und Berlin lebt und arbeitet Alfred Steffen heute im Rheinland, wo er sein Archiv systematisch digitalisiert, neu strukturiert und in kuratierten Editionen publiziert.
