Biographical Notes
Alfred Steffen was born in Bergheim near Cologne and has worked as a photographer since the mid-1980s. He studied photography at the Lette-Verein in Berlin and began his career at TEMPO magazine.
His photographs have appeared in Vogue, Stern, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, and Rolling Stone. His portraits include Prince, Leonard Cohen, Lenny Kravitz, Laurie Anderson, Sigourney Weaver, the Beastie Boys, Herta Müller, and Willy Brandt.
Steffen organises his photographic archive into six groups: Zeitgeist, People, Environment, Nature, Situations, and Patterns. The work ranges from Berlin’s rave and club culture to New York street photography, portraits, animal studies and photographs of natural and urban structures.
Selected projects include:
– Portrait of a Generation – The Love Parade Family (TASCHEN, 1997), photographed at the Berlin Love Parade in 1996.
– Comfort Zone (2001–2003), photographed in the unisex bathrooms of the Berlin club Cookies.
– Sagen Sie jetzt nichts / Don’t Say Anything (since 2006), an ongoing photographic interview series for Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin featuring around 160 personalities.
– GOOD TIMES (New York, 1992–1994), panoramas and street photographs made in New York.
– Boombox – The Golden Years 1978–1983 (2009), a series of portraits of portable cassette players from the period.
– GREEN (since 2020), photographs of plants and natural structures.
– Animals, including portraits of the chimpanzee Milandu and an ongoing series of donkey portraits.
Steffen is currently publishing selected works from his analogue and digital archives as limited fine-art editions. These include photographs of Prince (Monaco, 1994), Giorgio Armani (Milan, 1995), Leonard Cohen and Lemmy Kilmister, alongside cityscapes, conceptual works and recent series including GREEN and Milandu Dreaming.
After living and working in Hamburg, New York, Paris and Berlin, Alfred Steffen now lives in the Rhineland, where he is digitising and reorganising his photographic archive and preparing selected works for publication.

Alfred Steffen wurde in Bergheim bei Köln geboren und arbeitet seit Mitte der 1980er-Jahre als Fotograf. Er studierte Fotografie am Lette-Verein in Berlin und begann seine berufliche Laufbahn beim Magazin TEMPO.
Seine Fotografien erschienen unter anderem in Vogue, Stern, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin und Rolling Stone. Zu den von ihm Porträtierten gehören Prince, Leonard Cohen, Lenny Kravitz, Laurie Anderson, Sigourney Weaver, die Beastie Boys, Herta Müller und Willy Brandt.
Steffen gliedert sein fotografisches Archiv in sechs Bereiche: Zeitgeist, People, Environment, Nature, Situations und Patterns. Die Arbeiten reichen von der Berliner Rave- und Clubkultur über New Yorker Straßenfotografie und Porträts bis zu Tierstudien und Fotografien natürlicher und urbaner Strukturen.
Zu seinen Projekten gehören:
– Portrait of a Generation – The Love Parade Family (TASCHEN, 1997), fotografiert auf der Berliner Love Parade 1996.
– Comfort Zone (2001–2003), fotografiert auf den Unisex-Toiletten des Berliner Clubs Cookies.
– Sagen Sie jetzt nichts / Don’t Say Anything (seit 2006), eine fortlaufende fotografische Interviewserie für das Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin mit rund 160 Persönlichkeiten.
– GOOD TIMES (New York, 1992–1994), Panoramen und Straßenfotografien aus New York.
– Boombox – The Golden Years 1978–1983 (2009), eine Serie von Porträts tragbarer Kassettenrekorder aus dieser Zeit.
– GREEN (seit 2020), Fotografien von Pflanzen und natürlichen Strukturen.
– Animals, darunter Porträts des Schimpansen Milandu und eine fortlaufende Serie von Eselporträts.
Steffen veröffentlicht derzeit ausgewählte Arbeiten aus seinem analogen und digitalen Archiv als limitierte Fine-Art-Editionen. Dazu gehören Fotografien von Prince (Monaco, 1994), Giorgio Armani (Mailand, 1995), Leonard Cohen und Lemmy Kilmister sowie Stadtansichten, konzeptuelle Arbeiten und neuere Serien wie GREEN und Milandu Dreaming.
Nach Stationen in Hamburg, New York, Paris und Berlin lebt Alfred Steffen heute im Rheinland. Dort digitalisiert und ordnet er sein fotografisches Archiv neu und bereitet ausgewählte Arbeiten für die Veröffentlichung vor.
