Im Januar 1987 hatte ich für einen Stadtbericht in der Zeitschrift TEMPO einen Fototermin mit dem Künstler Martin Kippenberger in Köln. Zu dieser Zeit wohnte er im Hotel Chelsea und wollte auch genau dort fotografiert werden. Ich war erst 24 Jahre alt und hatte keine Ahnung, welch ikonische Persönlichkeit ich da porträtieren würde.
Ich schlug vor, ihn eingehüllt in ein Laken – fast wie ein Gespenst – vor dem Hotel zu fotografieren. Das fand er doof und meinte, ein Kissen würde völlig ausreichen. Vorher wurde aber natürlich noch das ein oder andere Bierchen im Cafe Central getrunken. Es sieht dort heute noch genau so aus.

In January 1987, I had a photo shoot with the artist Martin Kippenberger in Cologne for a city report in the magazine TEMPO. He was staying at the Hotel Chelsea at the time and wanted to be photographed there. I was only 24 years old and had no idea what an iconic personality I would be portraying.
I suggested photographing him wrapped in a sheet - almost like a ghost - in front of the hotel. He thought that was daft and said that a cushion would suffice. But before that, of course, we had a beer or two in the Cafe Central. It still looks exactly the same there today.
